Thinking

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those
days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on
their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. - Hebrews
8:10 (ESV)
And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered
them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right.
- Romans 1:28 (CSBBible)
I believe it was one of my seminary professors, Dr. Jack MacGorman who said,
“Every thought we have about God, originates with God.” What he was referring
to is this - left to our own devices, we would never have a thought about God.
Before becoming a Christian, there was a part of me that was missing (God’s
Spirit); however, I didn’t become aware of what I was missing until I actually
had His Spirit. There was a Joni Mitchell song that was popular back in the
1970’s called, “Big Yellow Taxi”. In the song there is a line, “You don’t know what
you’ve got… till it’s gone.” In the context of the Holy Spirit, you don’t know what
you’re missing… till He comes. The moment I became a Christian, I was instantly
aware that a void that previously had been within me, was now filled.
I can’t explain this in any other way other than to say it was the supernatural
union with Christ that made me aware of what I now had, and at the same time
aware of what I had previously been lacking. The void within each and every
one of us prior to becoming a Christian, is an inherent need God has created
within us, to be in fellowship with Him. Blaise Pascal a notable pioneer of
mathematics and physics in the 1600’s stated it this way – “What else does
this craving, and this helplessness proclaim, but that there was once in man a
true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?
This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that
are not there, the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help,
since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable
object; in other words, by God Himself.”
